Which Gem To Use In The Helm Socket?

Diablo 3 Helms And Sockets

In Diablo 3 many helms have an open socket for adding a Gem.  When a gem is added to a piece of Diablo 3 head gear, you get a nice stat buff that corresponds to the color and level of the gem added to the helm's socket.  Regardless of how you obtain your helm, you want to use one that has a socket so that you can take advantage of the great stat boosts too.  Gems all offer different stat boosts depending on what they are socketed into, be it a weapon, helm, shield, or other armor.  The following statistics apply when a gem is added to a helm.

Gem Stat Bonuses For Helms

  • Amethyst - Up to 18% extra Life.
  • Emerald - Up to 31% extra Gold Find.
  • Ruby - Up to 31% more Experience Per Kill.
  • Topaz - Up to 31% more Magic Find.
The Amethyst Gem bonus is factored in after your other vitality stat bonuses and it stacks, so this is a great way to bump up your life pool.

The Emerald Gem is a great addition for farming gold as long as you aren't having problems staying alive.  It is especially beneficial for stacking onto a gold farming Demon Hunter with Ferrets for collecting the gold for you.

The Ruby Gem is great for leveling your Diablo 3 character more quickly.  Even if your goal is to create a farming character, getting to max level as quickly as possible is always going to be more profitable than farming the lower difficulty levels.

The Topaz Gem is a great addition to a Magic Find build as the Topaz Gem adds a nice buff to your Magic Find.  That is, if you aren't having trouble staying alive.

As you are leveling your character, for the Helm socket I would focus on a Ruby Gem first, followed by an Amethyst Gem if you are having problems staying alive.  Wait until you are at maximum level and are ready to begin your gold and magic item farming career, before switching out to a Topaz or Emerald for Gold Find or Magic Find.

Death Is Bad For You

The biggest set back to farming efficiently is Death!  Dying is a major waste of your time, so focus on staying alive before focusing on maxing out your gold and magic drops.  Make sure to focus on having a balance of survivabilty stats and your major damage dealing stat before worrying about the other D3 farming character item affixes.  Dying and running back to your progress point are major time wastes and will drastically eat into your farming potential, if you are seeing the death screen a lot.  Not only is dying a waste of your time, but it is also expensive, as each death increase your repair costs.  These repair costs can get quite hefty when wearing higher level gear.  So try to avoid death at all costs.
